Hydrophobic lens

A hydrophobic lens is a lens that repels water and other fluids. They are used in contact lenses, eye drops, and intraocular lenses (IOLs).

How hydrophobic lenses work

Hydrophobic lenses are coated with a water-repellent material, such as fluorine. This means that when the lens is placed in the eye, it will not absorb water, become wet, or tear.

Hydrophobic acrylic IOLs are the most widely used IOL material. They are made of crosslinked copolymers of acrylic esters.
